Welcome to Episodes from Chinese History, a Suite101 anthology based on columns from my East Asian History section at Suite101. There are twelve chapters in this anthology, the first ten of which first appeared on Suite101. The first of these is "An Introduction to Chinese History"; this now appears in its original form which was a little too long for the guidelines at Suite101. The final two chapters are original and exclusive to this anthology: they are "The Great Leap Forward" and "Gods, Demons, Immortals and Dragons."
I have greatly enjoyed compiling this anthology and writing the material in the first place. History, especially the history of this vast and compelling region, contains so many vivid and extraordinary lessons for people today that I hope it will never be totally forgotten. Understanding the background and culture of other peoples is a vital part of understanding the people themselves and in promoting tolerance and the celebration of diversity. Writing in June of 2004, the world seems to be in need of a little more tolerance and celebration of other people
