Introduction
This offering is a brief account of restrictor plate racing on the superspeedways of Daytona and Talladega, and the news of what was happening in NASCAR during that time period. It begins with the April 1998 Die hard 500 at the Talladega Superspeedway at Talladega, Alabama, and wraps up with the Winston 500 in October of 2000 at the same facility.
The following installment, Restrictor Plate Racing II, begins with the death of Dale Earnhardt Sr. at the Daytona International Speedway in February of 2001 and the stories that surround his unfortunate demise. This collection of articles covers restrictor plate racing from the fateful Daytona 500 on February 18th, 2001 to the fall of 2003 on the super-speedways of Daytona and Talladega. There are also special articles on the death of Dale Earnhardt Sr., and the news that surrounded his untimely demise. You’ll find that as NASCAR has constantly changed the rules on the restrictor plate tracks, the racing remains pretty much the same. They’ve fooled with the aerodynamics, fuel cells, tires, and restrictor plates, but the racing still resembles a 190 mile per hour parking lot.
