Real Gifts

To be born is to receive the gift from the Infinite called life. The gifts do not end with our birth, for we continue to receive extraordinary gifts throughout our lives whether we acknowledge them or not. In a manner of speaking, we do not receive those gifts so much as we discover them to a greater or lesser degree as life unfolds.

In my life I have learned that Spirit (or whatever name you wish to call "all that is") wants nothing more than to give us what we really want, and the greatest gift of all that it desires to give us, is the gift of our true self.

Those truths of the Self are as simple as compassion, courage, mindfulness, helpfulness, and a sense of our connection with the larger web of life. We do not need complex philosophies, metaphysics or theology to help us find our way in the world. To be happy, we just need to tune in with the guidance of that inner spirit that wants us to extend love, compassionate understanding and a helping hand to our fellow beings, human and non-human, and probably for most of us, to ourselves.

The essays and stories in this collection that I wish to share with you, tell in some way about those wonderful gifts, which I have discovered on my own spiritual journey. They are all gleaned from Crossings and Reflections (formerly Caring for the Soul), the topic for which I have written for Suite101 since June of 2001.
